An ergonomic computer chair is essential to a safe and productive computer workstation
Proper support to the legs, back, buttocks and arms are important and necessary to the health and well being of an individual sitting for extended periods of time. This means an ergonomic computer chair must provide support to numerous different areas of the body. One of the ways an ergonomic computer chair does this is by being extremely adjustable in order to fit the different shapes and sizes it needs to accommodate.
The following elements are essential to an ergonomic computer chair
A normal spine has a natural S-shape curvature. It is imperative that this natural curvature be maintained for comfort and health reasons. A chair that has good lumbar support helps maintains the natural S-shape curvature of the spine. Preferably the lumbar support in the backrest should be adjustable with the outward curve of the backrest fitting into the small of the lower back.
There should also be an adjustment that allows the backrest to recline backward from an upright position and have the ability to lock in place. It should also provide enough tension to provide sufficient resistance against lower back movement.
The backrest should also have an adjustment to allow it to move back and forth laterally to adjust for the height of each user such that the front edge of the seat does not contact their knees.
- Seat adjustment and cushioning
Having an adjustable seat is absolutely essential since sitting in a chair that is too high means your feet will be unsupported and this will force you to move forward placing undue strain to the lower back. This can lead to swelling, pain and numbness. Having a footrest support in addition to an adjustable seat is also a good idea.
Also, make sure the seat edges are padded and rounded so as not to cut off circulation in the legs while you are sitting.
Using armrests is not an absolute requirement. However, should armrests be used consider adjustable armrests to prevent you from leaning over while resting your arms. It's also important that armrests are not too high or low and that they are sufficiently soft enough to provide comfortable support.
Never get a chair with less than five legs since they may provide inadequate support and tip over easily. Make sure the casters are appropriate for the intended floor surface on which the chair is used.
